Cosmo Digital: Comic History and More
01-11-2012: News Updates Database
After a very long time of no updates to this site, I have begun to work on it some more. One of the major changes I have already made is to convert my news item/updates into a SQL database. This is something I have had on my plate for well over a year.
This means that instead of the labor-intense process of coding and moving HTML each time I had a site update, I can simply type them into a PHP form. This makes managing the updating/archiving of these news posts far easier, and consequently I will probably do it far more often.
05-27-2010: The Dreaming Void
I just finished a science fiction novel, which is a bit of a rarity for me. This one was The Dreaming Void by Peter F. Hamilton. Normally I don't read much (or any) science fiction, but the title caught my eye at the library and the cover blurb sounded interesting enough for me to pick up. Since I am essentially killing time until Tad William's final Shadowmarch novel comes out later this year, I figured I would try and read it.
Having read it, I am still a bit unsure whether I liked it or not. It was interesting enough to make me want to keep reading, and I will certainly pick up the second book in the trilogy. However, Hamilton wrote a previous series set in this same universe. Since this series takes place over a thousand years after the first, I figured there would be very little overlap in storyline, and therefore could get away with not having read the first books. It seems I was wrong, because in this universe most of the characters are still alive a thousand years later, even if they were killed off in the first series. The result is that as I read through the novel, I constantly felt like I was missing out on a considerable amount of back story that the author assumed I would know.
Even with these gripes it was interesting enough, and a bit of a change of pace from my usual fantasy. I may end up writing a longer review of this series once I get further in it. This book and other recent reads are all listed on my Reading List page.
