Typewriter Repair - Part 2

Margin Ruler and Faceplate Removal

Let's begin disassembly of the typewriter. We will first start with removing a few of the exterior covers before getting into the guts of the machine. We will start by taking off the margin ruler. This is the piece located on the front of the typewriter with the ruler on it. Underneath this ruler are two sliders that set the margins for the page. We will remove just the ruler itself.

Once the margin ruler is removed, you will see two horizontal bars. This is the carriage guide. As you can see from looking closely at these bars, the carriage has a wheel that slides along one of these bars, keeping the carriaged aligned properly. We will address these bars in a later section.

Now we can take off the faceplate. This is the piece on the front of the typewriter (immediately above the keys) that says "Underwood" on it. A highlighted picture of this is below:

There are four flathead bolts holding this faceplate onto the frame. The two righthand bolts and top lefthand bolt should be easy to remove by unscrewing them. The bottom lefthand bolt is a bit more tricky, since the backspace key is partially blocking it. Holding down the backspace key with a finger while unscrewing this bolt will allow you to remove it.

Once the four bolts are removed, slide the faceplate out, up, and to the left of the machine.

Once this piece is taken off, we can now begin to get a good look into the guts of the machine. You can now easily see all the typebars as well as a pad the bars rest on. We will remove this piece at a later time. For now, we will move on to taking off the Carriage.
