8-10-09: Thrift Store Swag
A vast amount of time has passed since I last updated this main page. I have been updating the interior sections fairly consistenly, even though I always seem to wuss out when it comes to putting those changes on the main page. It thus falls to me to prove that this site is still alive.

A while back I put up a list of puzzles I own, an in late 2008 wrote a feature of my then-recent acquisition, the Chateau Chenonceau. I figured this assortment of three dimensional puzzles would not increase very quickly, if at all, since they are now out of production and consequently extremely difficult to find. All that changed, however, during this last month.

While traversing through one of the local thrift stores, I happened to notice a familiar logo peeking out at me from amongst the shelves of used toys and games. Hastening over, I realized that it was a three dimensional puzzle of the Millennium Falcon, and it looked to be in immaculate condition. My friend subsequently discovered another puzzle in the same store, the Bavarian Mansion. I happily purchased these two puzzles for less than five dollars total.

By rights this story should stop there with my lucky purchase. However, my friend seems to be a thrift store sleuth, and so went shopping at other area thrift stores and found additional puzzles, the Notre Dame Cathedral and U.S. Capitol Building. Later she picked up a small Victorian House puzzle, from 1992, that wasn't missing a single piece! So to cut this story short, it seems that rather than Ebay, thrift stores are the place to go for three dimensional puzzles. The most expensive one we bought was about four dollars, rather than the fourty or more they go for online. And best of all, they all seem to be complete, without any missing pieces at all!

books My list of books I have read has also expanded considerably. A couple months ago I went on a real David Eddings kick, which is somewhat eerie since I only learned afterwards that he died right around that same time. I also finished a series by author Russell Kirkpatrick, which I may still do a review of.

1-19-09: 2008 in review
comics Ever since 2009 dawned I have been meaning to update this site, and only today did I get a day off work and decide I should do it. The major update is the new 2008 Comic Collection Statistics. I ended up purchasing exactly 250 comics during the year, which is considerably fewer than I bought during 2007.

In addition to finally cataloging the comics I bought in 2008, I made another trip to the comic book store earlier this month to pick up the latest issue of Young X-Men (and several other issues). My comics page and pull list page have been updated accordingly. After reading through Young X-Men I updated the Victor Stats page with information about issue #9.

code Beyond updating my big list of comics, I have made several substantial changes to the xhtml/php backend of this site. It was a pain to made edits to every single page on the site, but now the navigation menus and stylesheets are far easier to maintain. I also cleaned up the site's directory structure a bit, making much easier to find the files I need when I am working on the site.

books I have also been reading more actual books. I am currently getting into the Camulod Chronicles series by Jack Whyte, which tells the story of King Arthur from the perspective of his Roman ancestors. I had initially purchased the fourth book in the series several years ago, not realizing it was the fourth book, and just now have gotten around to reading all the novels, so I can actually read the book I own. It is pretty good and rather compulsive to read, but then, I like King Arthur stories. I have added these books to my list of books I have read.
