5-27-10: The Dreaming Void
I just finished a science fiction novel, which is a bit of a rarity for me. This one was The Dreaming Void by Peter F. Hamilton. Normally I don't read much (or any) science fiction, but the title caught my eye at the library and the cover blurb sounded interesting enough for me to pick up. Since I am essentially killing time until Tad William's final Shadomarch novel comes out later this year, I figured I would try and read it.
Having read it, I am still a bit unsure whether I liked it or not. It was interesting enough to make me want to keep reading, and I will certainly pick up the second book in the trilogy. However, Hamilton wrote a previous series set in this same universe. Since this series takes place over a thousand years after the first, I figured there would be very little overlap in storyline, and therefore could get away with not having read the first books. It seems I was wrong, because in this universe most of the characters are still alive a thousand years later, even if they were killed off in the first series. The result is that as I read through the novel, I constantly felt like I was missing out on a considerable amount of backstory that the author assumed I would know.
Even with these gripes it was interesting enough, and a bit of a change of pace from my usual fantasy. I may end up writing a longer review of this series once I get further in it. This book and other recent reads are all listed on my Reading List page.

5-10-10: House needs work.
After a considerable time not updating this site, I am trying to at least make an attempt to update the main page occasionally. Ever since I purchased a new house in January, I have been spending the majority of my free time fixing it up so it is in livable condition, and consequently have been neglecting this site.
Regardless of the toils of my new house, I have been keeping up on my reading. I just finished Dante's Equation by Jane Jensen, a science fiction novel published several years ago. It was interesting read, and played around with some cool concepts that I have been thinking about for my own writing. This book and other recent reads are all listed on my Reading List page.

1-24-10: 2009 in review
2009 was surprisingly productive for me, which may explain why I only wrote two news updates the entire year.
I read a surprisingly large number of books during the year. The count surpasses 20,000 pages, which is the most I have read in years. I have also written up some reflections on 2009 and why I read some of the books I did.
Comics were one area where my participation suffered. I have a confession: I have not been to my local comic book store since April of 2009! This is due primarily to the cancellation of the two main series I read around that time, which cooled my desire for new comics considerably. This could also partially explain why my reading of actual books also spiked.
I have several goals for my sites in 2010.

I have several goals for my sites in 2010.
- Revamp the news archive into PHP/MySQL database goodness.
- Redo the entire design portfolio section, with new design and latest work
- Finally get comic collection into a database, rather than a year-old spreadsheet.
- Update Lonely Gods more than twice a year.
